Presentation on using flowmeters with clamp-on solutions by Badger Meter on examples of implementations carried out by WES for clients: Przemyśl Waterworks and AQUANET Poznań Waterworks, presented in english at the Cleanwater 2022 online conference organized by Badger Meter.
The project “Integrated Network Asset Management System” implemented for Przemyśl waterworks
WES Sp. z o. o. – as a subcontractor, was responsible for the delivery, installation and start-up of zonal metering of the water supply network of the Przemyśl agglomeration at 51 measuring points.
Installation of flowmeters and telemetry on the water and sewage network was completed, including 9 points of Badger Meters – Dynasonic TFX-5000 devices
Client’s main problems and needs
- old water supply network, partly from the 19th century
- high failure rate
- Client pays particular attention to potential damages related to water supply interruptions and water hammers
Main challenge
- finding appropriate mounting points for devices (we wanted to build chambers to facilitate assembly and service)
- access to electricity (battery solutions were originally designed)
- this made it difficult to find a suitable place in the area indicated by the client
Unexpected difficulties and challenges
- restrictions related to the Covid epidemic
- difficult weather conditions during a very harsh winter and hot summer
- one installation point had to be moved by 15 metres away (the cost of it with device mounted on pipes, would be inconceivable)
Results and advantages for Client
Waterworks will be able to:
- divide their network into zones and apply zone balancing
- monitor the network on an ongoing basis
- quickly detect failures in the water supply network
- reduce water loss
Project “Testing the reliability of flow measurement in pressure pipes with a large diameter using non-invasive ultrasonic flowmeters”, implemented for AQUANET – Poznań waterworks
WES Sp. z o. o. – as the main contractor, was responsible for the entire testing process, 2 measuring points for Badger Meteres devices were created, Dynasonic TFX-5000 – 2 sets of flow meters – stationary and portable,
chambers at the passage under the river on the drainage pipe
Test locations were set according to:
- full line of filling level
- accessibility to pipeline sections (chambers on eastern and western side of the river)
- pipe material and diameter (PEHD, GRP, cast iron, DN 700 – 800 mm)
- availability of power supply (no access to power, supplied by battery 12V 180Ah)
Despite the fact that installation was not placed in the ideal location, the measurement results proved the effectiveness of this method in this application
Results and advantages for Client
Waterworks got to know:
- that ultrasonic flow meters are suitable as measuring devices for monitoring the tightness of sewage pipelines under the river –but under specific conditions,
- how and where they should prepare actual measuring points,
- what kind of power supply for monitoring system should they provide.
SUMMARY
Comparing to other measurement options, the use of the clamp on solution technology will significantly simplify the installation and, thanks to the affordable price, enable quick implementation of tasks from the current investment budget of the Client.
